Biography

Dr. Michael Zulu is a Lecturer & Researcher in the Division of Virology, School of Pathology at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. His research interests are Viral immunology, Maternal-Fetal Immunology, and the pathogenesis of NCDs. He obtained his Ph.D. in Clinical Science and Immunology from the University of Cape Town. He then pursued postdoctoral training at the University of Surrey in England and the University of California and Emory University in the United States of America. Dr. Zulu was short-listed as a finalist for the 2024 NSTF-South32 Awards in the category: TW Kambule-NSTF Award: Emerging Researcher. He is a recipient of the SAMRC Research Capacity Development (RCD) Early Investigator Programme (EIP) Award, 2025 – 2027.

Research methods and approaches

Over the years I have established strong foundations in several research techniques, including multicolor flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, Immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry. I have recently taken interest in multi-omics research approaches such as GeoMx digital spatial profiler.
