Biography
Dr Daniel Mmereki is an exposure scientist and oncology-researcher whose work integrates occupational health, cancer epidemiology, radiation oncology, and artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. His research explores how environmental and occupational exposures influence cancer risk, progression, and treatment outcomes, while advancing data-driven innovations in cancer diagnosis and management.
He began his career in occupational and environmental health, studying exposure to industrial and mining-related hazards and their long-term health effects on workers and communities. He later transitioned into cancer research through Radiation Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, where he helped develop clinical databases for cervical and prostate cancers, providing some of the first analyses of treatment patterns and outcomes in South Africa.
Dr Mmereki has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers as both first and co-author in leading Q1 and Q2 peer reviewed journals and is a National Research Foundation (NRF) C2-rated researcher recognised for his scientific impact.
He has supervised MMed in Exposure Science and Registrars in Radiation Oncology and is a member of the International Society of Exposure Science, Southern African Institute for Occupational Hygiene, and the Association of Construction Health and Safety Management. His work exemplifies a commitment to advancing public health through innovation, interdisciplinary research, and equitable cancer care.

What are you looking for
I am looking to join a multidisciplinary community where I can exchange ideas, develop meaningful collaborations and contribute my experience in environmental health, exposure science, and public health.
I hope to learn from researchers and practitioners working across different disciplines, strengthen my ability to translate research into practical policy solutions, and develop partnerships that address environmental and health challenges in Africa and other resource-constrained settings.
I would also welcome opportunities to mentor emerging researchers, contribute to collaborative projects and share knowledge from my work in South Africa and Southern Africa.
